NextDC, Australia’s largest data‑centre operator, announced on the Australian Stock Exchange that its plans to double the size of its West Melbourne M3 site have been delayed. The expansion, which hinges on the installation of new 22‑metre power poles, has hit a roadblock after community objections and a pause in construction by electricity provider Jemena.

The M3 expansion was designed to meet growing demand for cloud and digital services, but the project requires upgraded power infrastructure to support the additional capacity. Jemena’s upgrade of the high‑line poles has been halted following protests from local residents who raised concerns about visual impact, safety, and the potential effects on the surrounding neighbourhood. The pause means the necessary power supply cannot be brought online until the pole installation is cleared, effectively stalling the datacentre’s growth plans.

NextDC’s announcement sent its shares lower, reflecting investor unease over the delay. While the company did not provide a revised timeline, it stated that it remains committed to expanding its Melbourne footprint and will work closely with regulators, Jemena and community stakeholders to resolve the issue.

Looking ahead, NextDC will continue to engage with local residents, explore alternative power solutions, and monitor the progress of Jemena’s upgrade work. The company aims to resume construction as soon as the pole installation is approved, ensuring it can meet the region’s rising demand for secure and scalable data infrastructure.
